IBM ThinkCentre A30 IDE to SATA adapter

One thing people don’t miss about the “old” PC days is the old and slow mechanical hard drives. When we started working on the IBM ThinkCentre A30 system, its original Hitachi Deskstar 40GB IDE drive was particularly noisy. Windows XP was pretty slow to boot up as well.

We purchased the NFHK SATA Disk to IDE/PATA 40Pin Motherboard Converter Adapter for $7.68 from Amazon and it seems to be working nicely in this PC. We paired it with a Sandisk 120GB SSD that we happened to have laying around, although I wonder what max size drive would be supported in this system. With the SATA adapter + a 2.5″ to 3.5″ drive bracket, the SSD can’t fit in the original HDD location, so it is zip tied in place for now.
